Pronoun "itself" and noun "teenager"

Hello everybody. Is this sentense correct - "First, a teenager has to ask itself – what I want to be?" ? The thing is that, as I know, "it" is used for things and animals, but I dont know here the gender of teenager and so I dont want to use "himself" or "herself". Can I use "itself" here?

No, it would sound very odd. You can say "First, a teenager has to ask himself or herself– what do I want to be?"
