Pronoun for unknown gender

My friend said, " I watched a movie yesterday."

While changing the above sentence into indirect speech what do we replace the pronoun I with when the gender of "my friend l" is unknown.

Can we say

My friend said that he/she had watched a movie the previous day.

Thanks.
