pronoun choice

Ayn Rand and company tend to use the following format when expressing
malcontent in the face of collectivist influence.
"...defend against those who would otherwise do such and such..."
My question is this: if instead of "those" one wanted to use a singular
pronoun, what would be his best choice?
"He" doesn't seem to work, nor does "him". I seem to require a singular
pronoun that can function as both a direct object and a subject.
What's correct?
