I came across this sentence in an exercise.
I think he should replace him here.

The object form (him) is generally considered as correct after 'but' (=except), but in the poem from which this line is taken, the form used was 'he': http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casabianca_%28poem%29

I think the pronoun is subject here and not object. That's why I think it is he and not him.
