progressive verb fragments

I'm trying to figure out how to use a progressive verb sentence fragment after a semi colon. Example: Igor yelled at them; breathing heavily afterwards. Should I change the semi-colon to a dash? Is any of it grammatically acceptable and/or possible?

This is my observation: Generally speaking, whether we are writing a report, an article, an essay, or a narrative, stay away from using semicolon and dashes unless the contexts absolutely require such use. For semicolon, if you feel you have a thought (or a concept) in which you have to describe it sequentially in two parts, you may use a semicolon just for that special purpose. Even with that, many are opting out the use of semicolon and use a comma instead.

  • As for dash?
  • avoid it!
