Progressive form with FOR and RAIN

Hello.
Please, consider the following:
- What was the weather like?
- It was changeable. It was sunny for three days and it rained for two days.
Is it necessary to have a progressive form with the verb RAIN or is the Past simple acceptable?
Thank you

E) is the simple past tense, as you've used. 'It rained for two days' is perfectly normal. 'It was raining for two days' is not wrong but it seems to suggest something else needs to be said, while the simple past tense is clear and stands alone.
