The audience for movie has increased by astronomical progression.

About the 'progression' above, does it imply speed or amount, or both?

Hi Taka, It involves both. We are talking about the relationship between the number of movie viewers and time. As the time channel progresses forwards at equal intervals, the number of the movie viewers also increases at a highly accelerated rate..

>>The audience for movie has increased by astronomical progression. To me, this is an ackwardly constructed sentence which makes little sense. If my guess is correct what you tried to say was "The number of movie goers has increased expotentially as the movie industry progresses over time".

Hi Taka

I also find that sentence to be oddly worded. Where did you find it? Is it possibly a translation?

Hi Taka,
The audience for movie has increased by astronomical progression.

Yes, the final phrase is very awkward, as pointed out already,.
If you want to change as little as possible, I'd just sat 'astronomically', but that just suggests an increase in magnitude. If you want to include the idea of an increase over time, you might be better off saying 'exponentially'

Ooops! I just realized I mispelled "exponentially".....

Hi,

Before replying to Taka's question, I thought about the oddity of his statement too. It sounded like a mix-up between a statistical idea and that of a planet movement.

Then I found this from [url=http://links.jstor.org/sici?sici=0044-0094(196604)75%3A5%3C788%3AVOATBP

Well folks, the original is much odder (it's actually about drama):

Not only has the audience for drama increased by truly astronomical progression as compared to previous ages, but the actual quantity of dramatic performances produced has gone up in equal proportion.

Now I give in - even Taka thinks the statement he asked is odd! Emotion: smile
