Programme - program

Programme - Program

My dictionary gives a similar translation for these two.

What is the difference?

I do know that "programme" is used more in the context of things like a computer programme,

and that "program" is used more for things that are "planed" - "things to do".

Is it correct? If so, and since the use of computers is relatively new: is "programme" a new word?

Thanks.

As far as I know, the biggest difference is the Atlantic Ocean (Canadian/US border, too).
