Proficient in computers

(1a) He is proficient in using computers.

(1b) He is proficient in his computer skills.

(1c) He is proficient in computers.

My non-native English speaking friends think (1a) and (1b) are correct. They think (1c) is wrong.

Is (1c) really wrong? Thank you very much.
