My favorite "learning through play" experience was building leggo puppies. We were asked to build a few different dogs using special legos designed to make it easy to get a comparative volume and surface area simply through counting. We built a small dog, and then scaled the dog up with the same relative dimensions. Afterwards we took note of the volume to surface area ratio of both the big and small dogs. Then we compared the two ratios. What I really liked about this experience was that I did not know what to expect, so when I got to the end, it was a nice surprise, and there was a brilliant light bulb everything clicked into place moment (after the minor panic attack and quadruple counting to make sure we had not messed anything up) Additionally, the teacher then used that to disprove the possibility of living with giants unwittingly by relating it to knowledge of the relationship of this ratio to cooling potentials. This, needless to say, helps me sleep a lot better at night.
