Professional grave

Hi

A police officer was talking to a federal agent (actually he was lying to him).

At some point he thought to himself: I'm digging my professional grave deeper with each word.

I understand that "professional grave" here means "career".

So, in a way, he's burying his career as a police officer cause he's lying. Is that right?

By the way: federal officer and federal agent are one and the same?
