professional counterparts

Generations of young writers have been taught not to begin sentences with but, yest their professional counterparts seem relatively uncerned. (The Cambridge Guide to English Usage)

I know that a counterpart is a person or thing closely resembling another, esp. in function. I also know that professional means following an occupation as a means of livelihood or for gain. But who on earth are the professional counterparts of generations of young writers?
