Vocabulary

• product vs. produce

Hi!

I read the following in a TOEIC book:

“African nations introducedEuropeto the pleasures of tropical ______ some 70 years ago. But fruit and vegetable exporters from Southeast Asian, Latin American, andCaribbeancountries have for the most part supplanted African exporters in recent years. For them to regain market share, African exporters need to build better transportation systems and storage facilities. They need to increase the quality and the variety of fruits and vegetables (that they produce as well as improve their marketing techniques.

(A) product

(B) production

(C) produce

(D) producing

(Answer: C

- The noun produce means “fresh fruit and vegetables.” The next sentence tells you that the paragraph deals with tropical fruit and vegetables.)” ((Complete Guide to the TOEIC Test, 3rd Edition, by Bruce Rogers, p. 319))

I don’t think ‘a tropical product’ is a wrong expression, so there’s nothing wrong with the usage. The reason that A is not correct is that the ‘product’ is a COUNTABLE NOUN. Thus, if (A) were “products”, (A) could be correct, TOO. What do you think? Do you agree with me?

Thanks in advance.
