Context:

The experience of France reminds us that not all soldier-artists painted during the conflict. Thus the nation could not fully explore the possibilities of war art. Georges Braque and André Derain, for example, joined up together in August 1914. Braque, severely wounded in 1915, endured a long convalescence but apparently painted nothing during the war. Derain, demobilized after the Armistice, produced no war pieces that survive (Art and War by Laura Brandon).
