process vs act?

Hi,

Can you tell me if the first sentences of pairs are focusing on action or process; whereas the second sentences of pairs are focusing on acts?

1.The playing by boys has proved they need to improve their performances.

Yours are difficult examples to judge, since the sentences are not very natural. If I fix them:

1.The boys' play/playing has proved they need to improve their performances.-- yes: act / process
2. The shaking of the ground alarmed them. -- only this form, the process, is natural.
