Problems with Noun Phrases

We have been told to underline the noun phrases in the following sentences.

1. Evenhandedness is a virtue in the law court.
2. Have you heard of the five-second rule?
3. The beach was strewn with rubbish from across the planet, or so it seemed.

My friends and I have different opinions about including the definite article as part of the noun phrase. I feel that though it functions as an adjective (modifying the nouns), it forms part of the noun phrases. Do you agree?
