Problem with Personification

Hi. I have some confusion on personification. I know that it's to do with giving inanimate objects, animals, or abstract ideas human qualities. But I'm unsure what counts as human qualities. Can you tell me which of the following would count as personification, would not count, and why? Thanks!

"rays of light speared the water"

"the shock of cold water stung, ripping the air from her lungs"

"the current twirled her in a whirlpool"

A simile is comparing two normally unrelated things using "like" or "as".

"The water is like a brilliant sun!"

A metaphor is: Life is a journey. Or,
