Problem is, the data don't clearly show that family dinners alone are what matter.

Would "Problem is, ..." be a less formal way of saying "The problem is (that) ..."?

Hi, Yes: less formal as well as less grammatically correct... I would not omit the definite article before problem in this case. Regards
