Problem in understanding a sentence

Hello all, 
please look at the following sentence;
Systems with temperature monitors will often shut down when the CPU gets too hot To protect them.

1. Is this sentence completely correct grammatically? I have doubt! 

2. What is the situation of the word monitors here? Verb or adj?

3. To what things the word them returns to?

Systems with temperature monitors to protect them will often shut down when the CPU gets too hot.
The infinitive phrase was not positioned in the best place in the sentence.

Them refers to systems.
A temperature monitor is a sensor (such as a thermocouple) with control electronics which can trigger a system shutdown if the temperature exceeds a certain pre-set
