Problem in understanding a sentence.

How to understand the following sentence (I'm also wondering what do the words "thus", "wrote", "affair" and "with" here refer to) :

"Thus wrote Samuel Johnson in 1750, at the beginning of an English lover affair with biography that culminates in the publication of the new Oxford Dictionary of National Biography."

According to my understanding: It was Samuel Johnson, an English lover, wrote a biography in 1750. In the very beginning, what he wrote was just a biography. However, the biography was adapted to the new Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

Frankly speaking, I don't think that's the right answer...

So, I hope someone can explain for me...THANKS

Johnson wrote the first (I suppose) English biography, writing and reading biographies became increasingly popular, and at last the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography appeared as the 'best' or most comprehensive English biography.
