talk turkey means to gossip, beside themselves means u r extremely angry, and i don't really know the rest. well i hope this helps a little. i'm actually looking for a web page for idioms too. bye

Okay - I think I need a bit of help with some idioms.

What does "In a bind" mean? I've looked it up in a dictionary but there isn't a definition, the only thing I know is that it is related to the business world, is it that way?

And, what about "Put our heads together", it says it means "To discuss or plan something among ourselves", does that mean that what you discuss only affects you? Or, is there a third person?

2. Fly off the handle = become extremely angry

3. On cloud nine = very happy

4. Beside herself = so upset she does not know what to do

5. In a bind = unable to get out of a situation

6. Put up with = endure

7. Comes through = succeeds

8. In the doghouse = in disgrace

9. On the fence = taking neither one side nor the other in an argument

10. Down in the dumps = depressed

11. Stands up for = supports

12. Walking on air = incredibly happy

13. On the skids = on the way to becoming a down and out

14. Off the wall = random reaction

15. Talk turkey = talk seriously about something

16. Turned up = found

17. Put our heads together = get together to discuss something.

I'll do it. Some have more than one meaning. If that is the case, I made a guess as to which meaning is most common or the one that I think you want. Out of context, it's impossible to be sure.

1. Shaken up. Discombobulated. I was shaken up in the accident.

2. Fly off the handle. Get irate quickly. She had a bad temper. She was quick to fly off the handle.

3. On cloud nine Ecstatic. Extremely happy. On his thirteenth attempt, he passed his driver's license test. He was on cloud nine.

4. Beside herself. In such an emotion state that it is a figurative out of body state. Her husband had just died. She was beside herself.

5. In a bind In a tough situation. She was in a terrible bind. It was cold and raining; her tire was flat. She went to the trunk and the spare was flat too.

6. Put up with To tolerate. My roomate is so obnoxious that I'm not sure if I can put up with him much longer.

7. Comes through To bring help or accomplish a goal. I really want to have that party at the frat house tonight. I hope Jim comes through with the beer.

8. In the doghouse In trouble. He was really in the dog house when his wife found lipstick on his collar.

9. On the fence Uncertain. I'm not sure if I want to hire him. He's got good credentials but he gave me a bad feeling. I'm on the fence about him.

10. Down in the dumps. Sad. John was really down in the dumps when he discovered that Tammy was cheating on him.

11. Stands up for. To remain strong, especially for others. He is a true freedom fighter. He really stands up for the huddled masses yearning to be free.

12. Walking on air Also, ecstatic. It was the end of Hubert's first date. Rebecca pulled him to her and planted a big kiss right on his lips. He was walking on air.

13. On the skids. Getting worse quickly; in steep decline The American economy is really on the skids.

14. Off the wall Out of the ordinary to the point of being unacceptable. The clothes that the designers showed this year were really off the wall. No woman in her right mind would ever wear them.

15. Talk turkey To talk frankly. Let's talk turkey about your conduct at the Christmas party. I think you really stepped over the line.

16. Turned up Appeared, frequently without announcement or as a surprise. Little Jimmy wandered off. Everyone went out looking for him. All of a sudden, he turned up at home. No knows how he got there without anyone seeing him.

17. Put our heads together. Work or think together; brainstorm. We've got to finish this presentation tonight. Let's put our heads together and figure out what we're going to do.

I'm curious about a few of these and wonder if there's a difference between American and British usage.

4. Beside herself = so upset she does not know what to do. In our use, the emotion doesn't have to be upset. You can be beside yourself with joy, anger or any emotion.

9. On the fence = taking neither one side nor the other in an argument. For us, it doesn't have to be an arguement. You can be on the fence about a simple decision. Should I have a ruben or a bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwitch? Hmmm...I'm on the fence.

14. Off the wall = random reaction This seems totally different. Our sense is wierd, either in a funny or unacceptable way. Kevin really cracks me up (makes me laugh). He makes a lot of off the wall comments but they're always funny.

16. Turned up = found For us it can be found or it can just appear without ever being lost. Edward turned up at our door at six o'clock this morning with a keg of beer. Apparently, we're having a keg party.
