pro-verb for be + adjective

For example,

People tell each other to be modest.
However, it is difficult to be modest.

In the second sentence above, in order to avoid repeating the word "modest," which of the following is acceptable?

1. However, it is difficult to.
2. However, it is difficult to be.
3. However, it is difficult to do.
4. However, it is difficult to do it.
5. However, it is difficult to do that.
6. However, it is difficult to do so.

Or any other expression?

I would not use 1 or 2. The others are OK.
