Pro-noun agreement?

I have recently wondered if I've constructed thousands of my English sentences incorrectly.

Once I learned about direct objects in SPANISH, I began to have lots of agonizing questions about pro-noun agreement in English. For example,

Understanding factors that affect CHILDRENS' learning might allow society to positively influence CHILDRENS' life trajectories

Understanding factors that affect CHILDRENS' learning might allow society to positively influence THEIR life trajectories

Which one is correct? The second one sounds smoother, but it is academically incorrect?

Thank you,
Joseph
