Prior meeting

If you cannot attend a workshop becasue you have made an appointment with your students , can I write as follows?

Dear xx,

I am sorry I can't make it that day because I have made a prior appointment with my students.

You may say prior, but its usage is considered pompous by some and I don't use it because it's too formal for my style of writing. Why not simply say "I'm sorry but I can't make it because I have an appointment with my students that day". or "...

Why not simply say "I'm sorry but I can't make it because I have an appointment with my students that day".

or "... a previously scheduled appointment with ..."

A small further comment.

A teacher does not usually 'make an appointment' with his or her students, unless it is some quite unusual situation.

prior meeting with you, the secretary has already submitted a quote per your request.
