Printed text in unnecessary past past tense use

Hi. What would you say if something in print text has what someone might categorize as the use of an unnecessary past perfect tense use?

He realized it had just been/was a foolish thought. -- I think the past tense is clear enough.

When they heard the he had spoken/spoke, they couldn't believe it. -- I think the past tense is clear here too.
