Principal or principals

Hi,

The borrower has 3 loans, namely, calamity, emergency, and educational loan. I write the following sentence and send it to my supervisor.

Under the program, the loans of the applicant will be consolidated and he will be required to pay only the principals of these loans.

Question: My supervisor removed the s in principals. Is he correct? and Why? Thanks.

Top answer

I imagine that if the loans have been consolidated, the amounts have been added up into one total principal, so it looks to me like your supervisor is right. It should probably be ... only the principle of this (consolidated) loan .
