Prevent vs ban

Hello, forums! Although I see the difference between themeanings of "ban" and "prevent", I'm not sure how I can explain that difference in the following sentence, for example.

All cars have been prevented/banned from the town centre.

Could you help me explain the difference in the example above, please?
