prevent him

Hello, everyone,

1) “Friction can be a useful force because it prevents our shoes slipping on the pavement when we walk and stops car tyres skidding on the road. When you walk, friction is caused between the tread on shoes and the ground. This friction acts to grip the ground and prevent sliding.” *source; https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zvr3nrd/articles/zxqrdxs

2) Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English Online;

‘prevent somebody/something (from) doing something’

My questions are as follows;

1. Is ‘from’ with ‘prevent’ optional even in a formal style or still in an informal one only?

2. Is this case of omitting ‘from’ in also common with ‘stop’, ‘prohibit’, ‘ban’ (except ‘keep’)?

3. Is the possessive ‘his’ of 3) below acceptable in current English?;

1) prevent him from doing (mainly American style)

2) prevent him doing (mainly British style)

3) prevent his doing (?)

Would hope to hear your explanation.

deepcosmos 1. Is ‘from’ with ‘prevent’ optional even in a formal style or still in an informal one only? I don't have any way of knowing the answer to this one, but I suspect 'from' with 'prevent' is optional in all styles.
