Prevailing/prevalent

Can anyone please tell me what the difference between the two words is?

Prevailing = existing in a particular place at a particular time, The prevailing attitude towards the Olympics has been favourable . Note also the particular collocation: The prevailing wind is from the west >> the most common wind. Prevalent = existing very commonly or happening frequently: Coughs and colds are prevalent in the winter.
