Then how do you explain the common expression "Beauty is only skin-deep"?

I was going to say that I don't think the question of surface appearance vs. inner quality has anything to do with the choice of "pretty" vs. "beautiful, " but that's not quite true. I think "pretty" generally refers to outward appearance and "beautiful" can refer either to outward appearance or "inner beauty."
