When saying 'pretty,' what is it used for besides people? I have wondered since some native speakers commented pretty's on my simple snowy picture.

"pretty" can be used for all kinds of things that are visually pleasant. It has connotations of "light" attractiveness, as opposed to, say, deep beauty.
