pretentious/ playacting

For eg.: scriptures says that the Gods were merely playacting..

In the above line is using 'playacting' appropriate?? is there any other word that I can use?

That spelling, "playacting", is anomalous, and it does not appear in the better dictionaries. Use "play-acting".
