Pretentious novel

Hi

Could you help me understand what is meant by this?

Her last novel is very pretentious.

Although I understand the meaning of the word, I cannot, say, decipher the collocation here. How can a book be pretentious?

Thanks,

Tom

I read it as "Her novel gives the reader a false impression of her being artistic or interested in the arts." (She seems to be an arty type of writer.)
