Presume vs. Assume

Can someone help me out with trying to explain the difference between presume and assume? I think the person I am speaking with might be intentionally playing dumb with me, but I'd like to know for future reference anyway.

Thanks!

I "assume" from what I already know about the subject. I "presume" sounds to me more like "I guess, I suppose".

Where they overlap in meaning, they both mean 'to take for granted, to accept without proof', and I find no real difference in use. 'Pre' means 'before' so perhaps 'presume' is looking slightly more into acceptance of a 'future' fact.
