Originally, "the press" referred to the members of the media that use the printing press -- newspapers, magazines and books. Now that even newspapers have online versions, I think the usage has gotten blurred. In many cases the words would be used interchangeably, but my guess is that newpaper journalists might resent television people being referred to as "the press."
