Present unreal conditional

1. If I laughed, they would think that I am stupid.
2. If I laughed, they would think that I were stupid.
Which is the correct way to write present unreal conditional sentences ?
Do we have to change the tense of the subordinate clause ?

Where conditionals are concerned, laughing is normally something that you could have done in the past but didn't:

or something that you might do in the future:
