I assume you want to make a summary of something like a film or book. That;s the only reason I can think of for changing it into the present tense. You try first, and we'll comment on what you write.

Now out of job and owing a hefty sum in compensation, Kai went out and got drunk. After a wasted Kai was picked up by an unregistered taxi driver, a series of nightmares began that not only implicated
