Present tense

I did this unit last year. But I think I was disadvantaged because I am not a native speaker.

Is it okay to use the present tense to say I am not a native speaker?

Sometimes, I'm confused because I don't know which tense should be used? Can anyone give me some advice?

thanks

Yes, it is OK if you are still not a native speaker at the time of making the statement.
