Present simple vs Past simple

Why is the present simple used in these examples?

The thinking and starting to enjoy are past states/actions, so...

"Just when I thought I could trust him, he stabs me in the back."

Just when cinema companies were starting to enjoy the edge that the lastest influx of 3D movies had been giving them over home entertainment, along comes 3D technology for your home.
