Present simple or present continuous?

After a period of depression, a person starts to socialise again. He says: "venturing out with old friends means that the world is now my oyster, I am back in control of my existence, I meet new people and make new friends."

Why did the author choose present simple? Wouldn't it be more appropriate to use the present continuous:"I am meeting new people and making new friends", because that is something that is currently happening in his life?
