present simple or present continuous?

Which one is correct when I want to invite somebody?
"I invite you to my birthday party" or "I'm inviting you to my birthday party"
and one more:
A hard operation awaits/ is awaiting me.

I'm inviting sounds much more natural, although the other is correct. Either is correct, but I don't use the verb. I'd prefer waits for me .
