present simple or continuous (temporary state action)

Hello !

Do you use the present simple or present continuous when you want to describe a kind of action that is temporary/in progress but somewhat in a kind of state,
like for example:
Are you hearing anything from Peter these days ? / Do you hear anything from Peter these days ?
