Present progressive and past progressive

Hi, Can we use the past progressive and present progressive tenses like this?

1.
(present progressive)

John is at home. He is playing the piano. (Then), he sees a bird flying over the roof of a little hut outside.

2.
Does it always to be in the pattern of "He was playing the piano when Jane walked in"?
(past progressive)

John was at home. He was playing the piano. (Then), he heard a cry from outside.
