present perfetct & present continuous

I am really confused , i don't know when we should use present perfect ?

for example what is the difference between these two sentences?
1.Rob hasn't studied very hard this term.
2.Rob isn't studding very hard this term.

1.Rob hasn't studied very hard this term. The mid-term exams show that Rod got bad grades. We are looking back on the past from the time the term began to now.
2.Rob isn't studying very hard this term. I am Rob's roommate, and I watch him every day. This is what I see - he plays computer games and does not study.
