Present Perfect/Past Simple

Hello,

Could you please have a look at the sentences below. Are they correct? Thank you for responding!

1)People who worked all their lives in one profession and then are dismissed may have problems with finding a new job.

I would use Present Prefect for the underlined verb.

2)With no means of support, desperate and hopeless they can lose their homes.

I this the 1st verb of the 1st sentence should be in the present perfect.

In the 2nd sentence, insert a comma between "hopeless" and "they".
