present perfect vs past simple

Could you please explain what tense should be use in a text where the author reflects on 2014, but the year is not over, actually, and I doubt if past simple can be used.
The text is something like:

The year 2014 is about to end. What was it like? It was hard. We had problems with raw materials, etc.
Or
The year 2014 is about to end. What has it been like? It has been hard. We have had problems, etc.
