Present perfect vs past perfect

Yesterday, he said that he has been/had been doing the same thing for the past 12 years.

I think both are correct. Are they? Elaborate, please and thank you.

Yes. "had been" is most strictly correct, but as it's a matter only of "yesterday" (i.e., one day out of 12 years), "has been" is certainly not a problem.
