Present perfect tense

I understand that we can state the exact time of happening of a past event in past tense but not in present perfect tense. Is it ok to do so in the following sentences?
I have met him today.
He has broken the window this afternoon. (assuming it is still afternoon time now)
Thank you.

Top answer

Hongkie I have met him today. He has broken the window this afternoon. (assuming it is still afternoon time now) The first is OK.

  • Hongkie I have met him today.
  • He has broken the window this afternoon.
  • (assuming it is still afternoon time now) The first is OK.
  • Although there is nothing grammatically faulty about the second, it sounds a little strange.
  • You would be more likely to hear a native say He broke the window (earlier) this afternoon or He broke the window a couple of hours ago.
