Scientists trapped by hungry polar bears

A team of Arctic researchers has asked the Russian government for help after their remote weather station became surrounded by hungry polar bears.

The bears have been fighting over food, and have prevented the scientists from taking their regular readings of the sea's temperature.

MY QUESTION IS: shouldn't we use the past perfect since we there are two actions in the past: A team of Arctic researchers asked the Russian government for help after their remote weather station had become surrounded by hungry bears.
Any difference in meaning between the two versions?

Thanks.

Magic79 A team of Arctic researchers has asked the Russian government for help after their remote weather station became surrounded by hungry polar bears. There is no need for the past perfect because the word 'after' shows the time sequence without it. The past perfect would not be completely wrong, however.

  • There is no need for the past perfect because the word 'after' shows the time sequence without it.
  • The past perfect would not be completely wrong, however.
  • Just a little unusual.
  • These are typical.
