Present perfect or past simple?

I love his books. I've read them all several times. A friend gave/ has given me his book and since then I've bought them all. Which one is correct, gave or has given?

Thanks but why? I couldn't understand it. And one more question "Help him! He fell/ has fallen into a hole." Fell or has fallen?

By saying 'since then', you are locating the giving of the book clearly in the past.

If he is still in the hole - He has fallen.

I would say it as shown above.

I'm assuming that neither use of 'his' is coreferential with 'friend' and that 'his' refers to the author.
